GARBAGE DISPOSALS
What is a Garbage Disposal?
- A Disposal is a simple electric machine used in many sinks to get rid of waste food. It grinds pieces of food into semi-liquid. After the garbage is ground in a disposer, it mixes with the rest of the sewage from the household’s sinks and toilets.
What NOT to Put in Your Disposal
- Cornhusks, artichokes, onionskins, celery, sweet potatoes, and other high fiber material
- Fats or Cooking Oils ( This can solidify in drainpipes, trap food particles, and clog drains)
- Coffee grounds
- Shells, large whole bones
- Metal, Rubber, and Glass objects
How to Prevent Clogs
- Flush with Plenty of water- 2 gallons per minute
- Use COLD water as long as the motor is running
- Place a strainer across the drain holes
- NEVER pour grease down the drain
- Avoid overloading the disposal
- A way to keep your drains clear and fresh is to use a microbial additive. These solutions are biologically engineered with bacteria that feed on organic waste and are safe for your drain lines and the environment. We recommend a formula called BioClean.
What to Do if Your Disposal IS Clogged
- A Buildup is not necessarily UNCOMMON
- Try grinding up several ice cubes in it, while running cold water
- If your disposal is clogged, turn off the motor and the water. Reach under the sink and insert the service wrench that came with your disposal (1/4 inch Allen wrench) into the hole on the bottom of the disposal. Turn it back and forth until it can turn freely in complete circles. Than use tongs to remove whatever caused the jam. Finally, after retightening the disposal, press the red reset button on the bottom of your disposal in case the disposal needs to be reset.
SAFETY: Never use your hand to remove an object from the Disposal
How Do I Get Rid of that Bad Odor
- Do not worry, this probably just means you have food matter built up somewhere in your drain/disposal
- Try grinding up a small piece (no bigger than ½) of a citrus fruit, like a lemon or lime ( You can also combine ice with your fruit while running it under water)
- You may also try Baking Soda down the drain
TIP: Before you scrap your old disposal, check the manufacturer’s warranty. Some warranties cover parts and labor for 5 years of more.
