~ Safety Alert! Dyer Vents ~

Dryer fires are beginning to surpass chimney fires in the United States. In most cases, it is lint getting into the machine’s heating element, sparking, and then fueling a fire.

Another concern is in gas dyers. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur when a blocked vent causes a back up from the exit of the house. (See Gas Leaks & Smells)

Warning Signs

  • Dryer is still producing heat, but taking longer and longer to dry clothes (especially towels and jeans)
  • Clothes are damp or hotter than usual at the end of the cycle
  • Outdoor flapper on vent hood doesn’t open when the dryer is ON.

Higher Risk Situations

  • Dyers that are used heavily
  • Residential dryer vent lengths may not have length greater than 25 feet
  • Flexible plastic duct that is no longer code-approved for clothes dryer
  • Flexible duct made of thin foil is not recommended because it can kink and stop
    airflow

How to Prevent Fires

  • Clean the lint filter regularly/ Check after each load
  • While dryer is operating, check that the outside exhaust is escaping normally
  • Follow manufacturers’ instructions
  • If having a dryer installed, insist upon metal duct unless the installer has verified that the manufacturer permits the use of a plastic duct
  • Clean your vent every 2 – 3 years

Benefits from Dryer Vent Cleaning

  • Allows your dryer to operate more efficiently
